Dunedin has the causeway, beautiful downtown area
and parks.
The causeway goes out over the inter coastal water way and
leads out
to Honey Moon Island and Caladesi Island. These parks
cost some money (
approx. $4.00/ car) but the islands have great
beaches and lots of sun
and fun. Be careful if you intend to stay
on the beach, the sun is brutal.
The beach is nice but there are
lots of
rocks at on the waters edge at Honey Moon Island.
You'll need to be careful going into and coming out
of the water.
Maybe someday the folks that maintain the beach will start
picking up all the rocks. There are bathrooms, showers and
food vendors at
the beach.
You can find all kinds of bird life on the island
and nature paths.
There are restricted areas where birds nest, please
respects
these restrictions.
Just before you enter Honey Moon Island, on the
left you’ll find
the boat launch for
Caladesi Island. The only way
to Caladesi Island
is by boat.
Directions:
Caladesi Island State Park is located west of the city of Dunedin,
off
the Gulf Coast, and is only accessible by watercraft. From channel
marker 14, west of the Dunedin Causeway Bridge, take a heading of 212
degrees on your compass for approximately 1 mile. Follow channel markers
into the marina.
A ferry service is available from nearby Honeymoon
Island State Park.
For information about the Caladesi Connection Ferry
Service
please call 727-734-1501.
The causeway is one of the best recreational areas
around.
There are nice wide walkways on the south side of the
causeway
and many walkers and bicyclers use these ways.
On both sides of the causeway there are parking
areas.
There are many places to fish and launch your
water
skies and small boats. Large motor boats are not usually
found there. If you’re a fisherman you can buy bait on the
causeway just before you reach the water.
There is only one facility out on the causeway,
there you can
rent canoes and get some food and there are restrooms.
Downtown area is filled with stores and night life.
There is
even a marina and a pretty park to visit.
